Toy Town Museum Changing Exhibits

“Toys in America”
Presented by

The Toy Town Museum has gone red, white and blue with its newest exhibits “Toys and America.” To celebrate our country’s rich history, the Toy Town Museum is using toys to highlight many of our country’s greatest accomplishments from the Battles of Trenton and Gettysburg to the invention of the motorcycle.
Rolling into the Toy Town Museum is Harley-Davidson®-An American Legend, an exhibit of memorabilia, collectibles and toys chronicling the history of the motorcycle and this amazing American company. This whimsical approach to “toys for the bigger boys” uses miniature
replicas, dolls and rarely seen collectibles to highlight the ingenuity and longevity of an iconic American company. The exhibit begins with the company’s start in 1903 with the production of their first motorcycle and continues through the progressions and changes to today’s designs. The exhibit has been made possible through the generous support of Mr. John Brinkworth, Sr. of Buffalo Harley-Davidson® and a group of local Harley-Davidson® collectors and enthusiasts.
“Behind every great man is a great woman” is a perfect introduction for the museum’s second new exhibit “The First Ladies.” This exhibit is a collection of exquisitely designed dolls from The Madame Alexander Doll Company. Each of the 38 First Ladies beginning with Martha
Washington through Pat Nixon is dressed in reproductions of their inaugural ball gowns. Originally known as the Alexander Doll Company, Madame Alexander was founded 80 years ago by Madame Beatrice Alexander Behrman, the daughter of Russian immigrants. She was raised over her father's doll hospital—the first in America—and often played with the dolls waiting to be mended. Her love of dolls led this dynamic woman to creating her own line of dolls that continues today. Local collectors, Mr. and Mrs. Freeman have loaned both this exhibits and items for the Harley-Davidson® exhibit.
And the third new exhibit is one of American’s most beloved dolls-Raggedy Ann in the “Art of Raggedy Ann and Andy.” On loan from the family of Johnny Gruelle and the Raggedy Ann an
d Andy Museum are dolls, books and original artwork of Raggedy Ann and Andy and their friends. From her start as a mere rag doll, Raggedy Ann was brought to life to through the artistic inspiration of Johnny Gruelle to become an American Treasure. Highlighted in this exhibit are the rarely shared Raggedy Ann proverbs written by Mr. Gruelle.
Throughout the museum, visitors will enjoy the a trip through American history as they enjoy dioramas of historical battles, toys invented right here in the USA such as the Erector set and a little local fun with the original puppets and props from the Rocketship 7 and Commander Tom.
